I didn't want to take away from any 'Top 100' threads with a lot of questions so I thought this would be a good place to post. I invite anyone to use it with tips, questions etc. Hopefully others will post here, besides me!

First off, a big thank you to Corogirl. I was wondering where I had seen an alternative to that 'sandy' background other than the straight dirt path and found it on your construction site :) No idea if that was where I saw it originally but that was what I was looking for but couldn't remember what. I started mine with the straight sections but I can use the other for an unfinished beach and see how they look side by side.
I vaguely recall a sand dune design somewhere but I could be mistaken. Its been known to happen. :D

Okay, building a coastline with boulder type cliffs. The cliff base is well on its way, now to go vertical. As explained to Kiwigirl this will hopefully be reminiscent of the old film noire with the high rocky cliffs on the oceanfront, a house of some type on top where the heiress inevitably gets thrown off and falls to her untimely demise :D

I've got a tidal pool shaped, was easy :) Just haven't placed it yet. I plan on using the small plant pod to line the cliff bottom with 'seaweed' and maybe the larger ferny looking one to soften it up a bit. I hope. Also plan on using black crates to shape a winding path from top to bottom.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, come take a look, farm 4. Construction hat required (NOT PROVIDED), under construction.

Hopefully others will take advantage of this thread to post questions and suggestions for other's ideas :)

I have placed two coasts side by side, one using straight dirt path sections, the other dirt cross path sections and the cross's look so much better for what I want. No straight lines! :) Now to do the left side all over siiiiiiiiiiiiiiighhhh

Thanks Lighthouse! Its slowly getting there :) The two coast pieces together make a nice pond for anyone that likes it too. Doesn't have to go on a border and makes a cool fishing hole :)

I did that on my Farm 2.

Farm 4 coming along nicely :) I've decided to use the old 'Mansion' as that one has a balcony that adds a lot to the impression of height.

It can be difficult to get the illusion of totally vertical height with the boulders. Look at the left vertical corner of the raised section and compare it to the wall just to the right of the steps (black crates). The left corner appears to go straight up and down while the wall right beside the staircase to the right of it appears to slope a bit. You can see the difference in how the boulders are stacked. I can change that but not sure I want to.

The tidal pool: When I first started playing with it the rock border to the left of the left coast piece (the border that comes with the coast)couldn't be hidden, couldn't lay square stone path pieces on it without them showing as being placed on top of the coast piece. Every else they appeared to show as being underneath. This is great if you want to use the stone path pieces to give the appearance of pebbles along the coast piece borders. The borders appear on top, no detail hidden by the stone path pieces. However, when I use the stone paths to 'hide' a spot that I want to put a boulder for example, the boulders appear on top of the coast piece. At this point I can change that whole area to a cavern which would be cool but that wasn't what I wanted. Maybe some other time, it would require some major changes.

Making a valley up the middle of the farm and am going to play with having a lake on the top right side. Also going to play with running a waterfall into one end and off the other from the lake into a couple of face-to-face coast pieces and emptying onto the coast line. Maybe :D

Please let me know how it looks so far! :)

Thanks to all the visitors and your kind comments, they are greatly appreciated.
I have helped a couple of people with problems on theirs and believe me, I do not mind taking the time out to do this, it literally is a pleasure. I still insist that what I've done is basic, so don't make your questions too complicated, my brain is liable to throw a lug lol
Anyone else with questions or comments, please post them. This isn't my thread, it is your's :)

Your grotto on farm one made using raspberry plots gone to waste and plowed fields is really creative. At first, until I looked closer, thought you'd used the small wood piles to achieve this effect.

I did it out of desperation lol Originally I had two different dead crops but people plowing would plow them. So now I use alternate plowed rows and raspberries. That way if the berries get plowed they can be replaced and dead again in two hours. That area I refer to as the Dead Zone, or Mother In Law suite :)
I see I have to move a couple of the scarecrows back in place. I moved them so someone could see the vertical lines of the cave entrance. Thanks for reminding me :D

I also placed roses on the sides of the cave entrance and let them die, but found they look better in color. The contrast adds to the surrounding 'dead' look.

Coast is pretty much done except for the far right corner. Had a lot of lake on the right side but it didn't look good. Waiting for my wine cellar to empty before I can move it to 4, then I can work more on the rolling land. I keep changing it. Waiting to see how the new update facilities look too, especially the new paths.

Hi Old Goat, I've made a rocky coastline on my second farm but it's far from finished, if I ever get the time to. I tried to make it kinda look like a seaside resort with all the restaurant facilities etc.. but I'm not happy with it so far, I'll be making changes to it when I get the time to. You can pop over and take a peek anyway. I've also done the sand look with the dirt corners as I did that with my first farm when I kept changing the look and preferred that over the straight dirt paths. Looks a bit better IMO.

My first farm hasn't changed since Christmas, it's still winter there haha. I did link to it at that time but I got so many messages I couldn't keep up with responding to them all so I unlinked my account. Hopefully this link will work for you so you can take a peek and possibly give me a few ideas for my second farm? My third and fourth farms are just crops, trees and factories so nothing spectacular there, not worth visiting :-)

Yes it can be done, I've done it and removed it now though. I'm trying to think where I saw one recently, but can't remember. I think it was on this thread. I know the crates have to be angled differently than what you have done to give it a total 3d effect. I think it was on this thread:)

My cave house on farm 3, does it take away from that hill effect? View with buildings on/off.

The lighthouse foundation, I know there are some built similar in real life but maybe mine would look better if I lowered it a bit and make the strict vertical walls more transitional

I can't wait to see this when it's finished! For me, I'd say the cave house isn't necessary and you kinda lose that it's a cave at all. I'd love to see you make the cave bigger and more pronounced, removing the small house.

As for the lighthouse, yeah, it could be a little lower....don't lighthouses normally sit in the water...just barely above the surface on some small island or mound of dirt or something? But, that said, I think it looks good as is too, so it's totally your call.

Happy pants
Jul 18 2010, 08:51 PM
I live in a coastal area, and lighthouses are built on whatever makes them most visible to ships at sea... often on the top of a cliff, a rocky promontory, or an island.

Old Goat
Jul 18 2010, 11:11 PM
The general rule for lighthouse locations seems to be that there is no general rule. They're pretty much anywhere and everywhere. To be honest what mine looks like isn't quite what I had in mind. At the time the only way I could give that impression of height was to stack tiny and small boulders perfectly vertical. I'm thinking maybe I can taper off the base, maybe take a layer of boulders off the top. It'll still look good :)

Your #3 is coming along nicely, I love the cliffs. I'm glad the cave has gone:), sorry. I suggest you do your hills with heaps of pines for a better forest effect, you can always do crops underneath the lot. I also think you should extend your cliffs and sea coasts along the bottom left and right sides.

Hate to tell ya this, but the cave is still there :D You just can't see it with the buildings 'on'. At one time cave houses were very popular in some European countries. Spain still has many old ones left. I believe there is a ban on building new ones, not sure.
I don't recall what the ones in Australia are called but there are many in the opal mining areas. Its a way to get around the ban on new mines lol at least that's what I read many years ago.

I might do more coastline on it later but I need to get this one done as is first, progress from there.
Good suggestions, thanks! :)

;) thank you Old Goat.. nice to hear that you like my farms. I change them so often that I dont remember anymore how they look... ha ha

Anyway, the lighthouse stand where it should stand. I would tried to moove the house a bit longer back from the lighthouse... so its looks like its stands more out in the ocean/sea.

The hills have their effects, I just wonder if you could put something betwen them? like rocks, or stonepaths or something... I dont know. I would tried out something. Just so there are no open space - than I think of the space whos most open.. lol..

I don't recall what the ones in Australia are called but there are many in the opal mining areas. Its a way to get around the ban on new mines lol at least that's what I read many years ago.

I might do more coastline on it later but I need to get this one done as is first, progress from there.
Good suggestions, thanks! :)

I think Spain's caves date from Moorish times, and I have been to both Coober Pedy and Lightening Ridge. Pedy has some fantastic cave homes, and the Ridge has mostly shacks and miners with guns, and a few cave homes. I must have a look at yours with the buildings off.

;)

Oh my, english is not my best language.. norwegian is - but I guess you would not understand a thing if I wrote that... ha ha

Why are you trying to hide the coast line border? I'm missing something here I think.

I would love some suggestions on what to do with the outside of my farm... I tried to have somewhat of a "blocked-off" area with the black fences, but I think it terribly failed. I regret spending all the money on those fences now.

I am thinking possibly the stone fences, which I had previously, and also continuing the flowers around, but I'd love other opinions. The stone fences aren't really exciting enough for me.

Also, the top of the "hill" with the mansion is a work in progress - I am stuck on which decorations to use and how to set it up. I am not happy with it at the moment. I'd love some suggestions there as well.

Here is the farm (called "Hope 4 Haiti")

Nice work Brad and I like the farm name :)
One thing that really sticks out is the stepped area made of stone fence, going up to the top. If you use the top one as a guide for example, the right front corner of the top one would be in line with the right back corner of the fence piece under it.
There are lots of options to use for steps other than the stone fence. The new curved and straight stone benches are another. I've stacked two curved ones as an example on my farm 4.
I'm sure someone will come up with an idea for the blocked off area.
Have you looked around at others?

Why are you trying to hide the coast line border? I'm missing something here I think.

Well I'm not *trying* to hide the coast line. On farm 2 I *had* wanted to make the one corner coast line with just the rocks in the corner connecting the two (if that makes any sense at all) but of course at the same time I'm also wanting to have a slope coming down to it. I just really need to set my mind on one thing....lol

Stunning and gives me lots of ideas. Is there a tip for getting things under or on top of other pieces? Part of my sea coast wants to be on top of the beach, part underneath. There's no rhyme nor reason. Thought it might be whatever is put down first, but nothing seems to change it. Thanks for any tips you might have.

Delete the top plot in that corner and all plots that are filling in the space, a total of 13 I think. They take away from the impression of slope. You've lost the sides of the slope. You can use boulders if they are stacked nicely or stacked fence to shore up the ends of the two slopes, they'll look like retaining walls, then you have a space you can use for...decoration of some sort? lemonade stand? Picnic blanket? Boat?? Table??

You have to turn your trees off first, then press the play button. That reloads the game with no trees and no little red squares that show where they are. You can only use a 1 plot plow. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't:) It's not recommended practice though:)

Prior to starting to plow you need to move something, anything (you can leave flowers on and move one) , then you can use the 4 plow. If that does not work (it usually does) then plow one plot where it will let you, delete it, then you can use the 4 plow.

It is not recommended because of the load on the servers and it can slow your farm down. Many players do it with no problems.
