Apparently you don't use punctuation in England either. I guess America invented that, too. Seriously, there are dozens of countries that play this game and the developers are from America, so it stands to reason they would spell things the American way.

Hi there :)
Do you mean the toolbars on the farms? Not sure they adjust for the multitude of 'different' languages and cultures such as 'American' or..ahem..'English'.
Here on the Forum however, please feel free to spell(or misspell) anyway you wish .. as long as it isn't profane, noone will mind or(for the most part) criticize.

Jul 06 2009, 10:26 AM
Navstart has a good point there - plus I thought a "plough" is the actual machinery used to "plow" a field? Therefore we spend our time plowing (seeing as we have no machinery) - not ploughing! If you really want to get pedantic then you really do need to check your capitals and spacing - re-reading your post would be good before actually posting! :p

lol..maybe we could talk them into a compromise..swap neighbors for neighbours and plough for plow..

I thought 'plough' was the apparatis, and 'plow' was the function...? You plow a field with a plough...(?) But thats really picking fly poop out of pepper. Then we have all the 'to', and too's...your, you're's and there, their and they're's !! oh my....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plough#cite_ref-0

In English, as in other Germanic languages, the plough was traditionally known by other names, e.g. Old English sulh, Old High German medela, geiza, or huohili, and Old Norse arðr, all presumably referring to the scratch plough.

The current word plough also comes from Germanic, but it appears relatively late (it is absent from Gothic), and is thought to be a loanword from one of the north Italic languages. In these it had different meanings: in Raetic plaumorati (Pliny), and in Latin plaustrum "wagon, cart", plōstrum, plōstellum "cart", and plōxenum, plōximum "cart box".[1][2]

The word is first attested in Germanic as Lombardic plōvum, referring to the wheeled heavy plough. From Germanic, the term was borrowed into Balto-Slavic languages giving Old Church Slavonic plugǔ and Lithuanian plúgas. Ultimately, the word is thought to derive from an ancestral PIE *blōkó, related to Armenian pelem "to dig" and Welsh bwlch "gap, notch".[3][4]

We must all be very very bored..lol

My Webster says that plough(which is defined there as a verb and a noun btw) and neighbour are the British spellings..personally don't see any reason why we can't interchange them at will..
Swapping 'to' for 'too' and 'their' for 'there' (or 'they're') and 'you're' for 'your' is just plain wrong wherever you live.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, plough was spelt plow in English-English until the 17th century, when English took over plough (originally spelt plouch) from the Scots. So the US (North American?) spelling is the original English spelling. :D

I must admit I type so fast sometimes I type phonetically, not correctly. I do know "to" from "too" and "their" from "there", but often I hit send without checking to see if my typing fingers and brain are still wired together correctly. What I do find funny is when people in the MP spell "no" as "know." I can understand shortening words, but they go the extra mile and add in letters :p

I'm not a troll. I was being facetious. English in iteself does not make sense, therefore fighting over the "right" way to spell words either the English way or the American way is just silly.

UK and USA two countries divided by a common language. While working in the US a guy from Georgia (named after a British King, of course) said to me, "Gee, you speak good American!" Just about the closest I came too clocking a yank. Except for the one who reckoned he heard that Scotland was a nice city!

I just enjoy the diversity and couldn't care less how things are spelt. :D. Incidentally, I use the plough version of plow when it suits me. I am English and was taught to spell it the 'ough' way, back in school, many donkey's years ago and yes, we were also taught how to use punctuation, believe it or not. Maybe it's a lost art amongst young people nowadays, who can only spell in text language.
My biggest grumble is about beggers, spammers and those who use FT as a flirting/dating site, in the rudest way possible.

I don't think so Lara. I think that's the one which tells everyone they are going to be deleted if they don't pass on a particular chain message to 'at least' 15 people. Some people have nothing better to do with their time, I guess.

plow followed by plzzzz ( both an abortion of the language ) is a major irritant in this game.

I am a Kiwi but educated in an English school and yes the misuse of the language and spelling IS a major irritant I would rather crash every hour, and believe me I do, than see the English language mangled. Each to his own eh? I selected UK English in the hopes of correct English and get American.Go figure that annoys me.Perhaps because I teach English but I can also add faster than the geek with the calculator in the local shops and I also know how to use an apostrophe.Call me old fashioned! We were taught these things were important kind of like manners but the people on FT and obviously some on the forum are prepared to forgo all of these.

If we are getting really picky here, maybe I could introduce you to Mr. comma? If you are going to go off on everything proper, please make sure you NEVER make a grammatical error. Be assured I won't call during your dinner...even though I am an American with terrible manners, I spend a lot of my dinner time with the geeks with calculators handing out food and socks to homeless teenagers.

This is a forum and if people want to say "plow or plough, nieghbours or nieghbors", or don't spell or use grammar correctly so what. It's not as if they are taking an exam :) As long as whoever reads it, can understand I don't see any problems....

if the devs are american then why british spelling of nieghbours?

What we call "American" is known to be one of the hardest languages in the world to learn or to figure out Some of our own words still use the original English spelling, and some do not. Add to that the fact that within our own country, between the coasts, and the Northern and Southern borbers, people use different terms and even variations in spellings. So there is no real set rules about such things. That's the great "American" way! Or is it? You can find simular differences in these things some other countries as well.
