It does cost more to plow your own fields (30% more), but the cost in coin is worth it to avoid waiting for response in the market... and a lot faster too.

The crops I plant are all for use in a facility, so the "extra" coin earned by letting some one else harvest does not apply. I have to sell that crop to "earn" more.

I often take the time to hire out, because I like helping other people advance. But I just stopped working for others overall, except for facilities for the few of my neighbors that bother to play anymore. My current pace will probably keep me on par with the released levels, assuming 20-25 at a time. I'm cool with that, even if it lags behind a little. I'm not (un)fortunate enough to be at home all day to play FT.
