Further, the update button you mention has disappeared and it simply reads:
"To finish linking your email to your account click the link in the verification email we sent you."
So I can't change it, or even reenter the same one. Of course we're dealing with an 83yro person whom having them make a brand new email from another provider is just asking for trouble in all sorts of ways.

I am not sure Ymail will work if there isn't any way to list allowed email addresses, but try adding those to your "contacts" for that email and see if that will work when you retry again.
