To add friends to a list, go to Account (top right of page) / Edit Friends/All Connections (on the left of the page) then find your friends that you want to add to a list and click on the Add To List drop down menu and add your friend, right hand side of a name.

You can also add lists in this area.

In the Chat, look for the list that you want under Friends List and switch it off.
